Refining Metallurgical and Corrosion Expert
Mr. Buchheim is a recognized industry expert in damage mechanisms, sulfidation, wet H2S cracking, creep, HTHA, fire assessment, IOW’s, corrosion reviews, RBI, and FFS assessments. With his over 33years of experience, he has been involved in all aspects of materials engineering including corrosion prevention, failure analysis, fire damage assessment and fitness-for-service assessments in the entire range of fixed equipment primarily in refineries, but also petrochemical units and upstream facilities.
He has been active at API and NACE and has been in leadership/technical development and author roles of many of the API downstream documents that have been created or substantially rewritten over the past 20 years, such as API 579, API 571, API 581, API 939-C, and API 941. Gerrit has taught courses in all of these areas and has organized and presented at numerous workshops and conferences on these subjects.
Gerrit provides practical advice to inspectors and engineers at refineries and acts as a central engineering metallurgical/corrosion/inspection expert for facilities that do not have access to this internally. He has focused his career on managing existing equipment degradation issues.
Gerrit has a mix of central engineering group experience at Exxon and BP for 2 decades, including assignments for 4 years at two large refineries and previous consulting company experience for 1 decade. He has visited/worked with over 100 refineries worldwide and his goal is to transfer lessons learned from these facilities to all of his consulting clients where appropriate.
Gerrit received both his BS and MS in Metallurgical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA. He is a licensed professional engineer in Ohio and manages the Pono Division of Becht Engineering.
