 Becht Engineering is excited to be partnering with Codeware, Inc. to present this 2.5-day COMPRESS software training.  Students will be building models of pressure vessels and performing calculations using COMPRESS.  Upon completion of this course participants will be able to design and rate vessels with ease.  Our instructor, Don Kurle, PE, has been working with Section VIII, Division 1 for over 35 years and worked several years for Codeware, Inc. as a technical support engineer assisting clients with technical issues related to application of the COMPRESS program.  He also developed and presented training classes in the use of the program.

Who Should Attend? Individuals involved with the design or inspection of pressure vessels who are looking to gain hands-on experience using COMPRESS. This course is intended for beginners, as well as experienced vessel designers and inspectors. To benefit most from this course, a familiarity with the ASME Code is recommended, but attendees are not required to have an Engineering degree or previous work experience in the subject matter.  If you wish to increase your knowledge of the Code in addition to learning how to use COMPRESS, we recommend registering for our ASME Section VIII, Division 1 Design with COMPRESS training course.

Key Topics Covered Include: 

  1. Performing software operations effectively
    • Setting default and user preferences
    • Creating new designs and opening existing files
    • Using screen elements and interacting with 3D COMPRESS models
    • Generating, printing and exporting customized design reports
    • Receiving software updates
  2. Designing  horizontal and vertical vessels with:
    • Stiffening rings, long weld necks, conical transitions, boots and domes
    • Tangential, tilted and hillside nozzles considering re-padding and limit or reinforcement
    • Skirt, saddle, leg, lug and ring girder supports
    • Optimal shell thickness
    • ANSI and ASME Appendix 2 flanges
    • Supports, shell thickness and ASME B16.5/B16.47 flanges considering wind and seismic external loads
    • External attachments including clips, ladders, platforms, piping, insulation and internal lining
    • Maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP)
    • Minimum design metal temperature (MDMT)
    • Metallurgy - brittle fracture, impact testing per UCS-66
    • Designing taking into account internal and external pressure
    • Zick analysis for saddle-supported vessels
    • WRC-107 analysis for loads on nozzles, vessel support lugs and other attachments
  3. Perform calculations, review and understand the generated reports

  Upon completion of this course, you will receive a certificate for attending 20 hours of classroom instruction.

We are now offering THREE types of courses, a 2.5-day Introduction to COMPRESS course, a 5-day course combining ASME Section VIII, Division 1 Design with COMPRESS training and a NEW 4-day Heat Exchanger Design with COMPRESS course!  Through instruction in a computer lab setting, students will gain hands-on experience using COMPRESS and working through the program and example problems along with the instructor.
