Sean Norburn
Sean Norburn is a registered professional mechanical engineer in Australia and the United Kingdom with more than 25 years of experience in mechanical/structural integrity assessment. His skills include applying fitness for service and non-linear finite element analysis techniques to components and machinery typically found in power plant (fossil and hydro power) and petrochemical plant.
Sean has prepared and supervised the following works.
- API 579-1 Level 2 and 3 assessments of high temperature and pressure equipment (high energy piping, process piping, storage tanks and pressure vessels), including weld defects, mechanical damage and wall loss assessments.
- Root cause investigation analysis of the cracking of several desuperheaters including validation of repair design.
- Dynamic analysis simulations, including fan blade liberation and heat exchanger tube impact risk studies for fin-fan heat exchangers at LNG plant.
- Life assessment of high temperature equipment, including gas and steam turbines using creep-fatigue life assessment techniques such as API579-1/ASME FFS-1, EDF R5.
- Delivered a ‘feasibility study’ for several coal fired/conventional steam turbines, having to operate ‘flexibly’ due to the introduction of renewal sources of energy.
- High Energy Piping assessments to risk rank welds to help optimize future weld inspection programs.
- Design verification of rotating equipment such as rotors, blades, vanes/nozzles typically found in gas and geothermal and conventional steam turbines.
- Used mechanical integrity analysis techniques to support failure analysis and root cause investigation, including studies to support litigation proceedings and insurance claims.
- Welding simulations to quantify residual stress for various components.
Sean Norburn holds a Ph.D. for research into Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics, awarded by The University of Manchester, UK. He is a Registered Professional Engineer of Australia and in the state of Queensland (RPEng, RPEQ) and a Chartered member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (CEng, MIMechE).
