Dimensional Accuracy – What is Achievable in the Field?

Measure_cove_20181022-144453_1 Accuracy and Precision Are Not The Same
When I am asked to speak about dimensional accuracy, I often refer to a personal story that happened to me when I began my career as a young structural designer. At that time, I was eager to impress the design checker with my ability to accurately dimension structural rebar spacing in a spread footing foundation. I wanted to make sure the rebar was evenly spaced based on design criteria and clearance. Without even considering the practicality of what I was doing, I placed the rebar spacing dimension of #5 rebar at 7 7/16” on center spacing. As I proudly handed over the drawing to the checker, he looked over the work, and a few minutes later he told me that we were going to the field to do some field measurements the next day. The next day, we proceeded to the site, and the checker was looking for some foundations...

A Dimensional Execution Plan - Measure Up To Project Expectations

becht_dimensional_technology_services
Plan the Work and Work the Plan I am confident that we can agree that it is essential for all projects to have an execution plan to be successful. We have all heard the common phrase, “Plan the Work and Work the Plan.” Many have been participants in strategy meetings discussing the most effective and efficient means to execute a plan on capital project work. So why does it seem that in today’s age of revolutionary technology we seem to be unable to execute a project effectively, efficiently, and without mistakes that cause re-work? In the past few years, most people I know have been involved with, and witnessed projects that failed to finish on time/on budget with mistakes that abound. After working with and servicing the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) business for over 38 years, I have experienced well executed projects and poorly executed projects. Although there can...

Becht Dimensional Technology Mitigates Potential Problems In Heavy Lifts

dimensional_control_w_heavy_lift
Written by Joe Collins & Derek Paterson Safety and precision are of the utmost importance of any heavy lift operation. Heavy Lift Field Advisors are tasked with measuring clearances to assure the load will clear obstructions, a step often done by hand with a tape measure. Moreover, Field Advisors are also charged with assuring the location of the crane matches the plan. It is critical that the crane is on the precise radius for the capacity charts to be valid – too far away and the crane will not have sufficient capacity to handle the load; too close and crane can’t boom up high enough to place the load. Again, these verifications are often done by hand with tape measure. In this article, we talk about specific heavy lift problems that could have been avoided by integrating Dimensional Control with the projects. So - What can happen without precise measurement?...

Physical 3D Models of Process Units are Returning to Use!

Physical 3D Models of Process Units are Returning to Use!
3D printing technology is now bringing back the use of 3D models of process units.  Having a 3D model has many benefits, including a more than ten-fold improvement in efficiency in doing model reviews, versus reviewing the model on the computer.  In the past, 3D models were created by assembling plastic pieces, which was very time consuming and expensive.  As a result, the practice was largely abandoned as 3D CAD models were developed.  Now, 3D physical models can be produced economically from 3D CAD models or laser scan data.  The models are produced by a continuous print; they are not assemblies of printed parts. Becht’s Laser Scanning division recently acquired a 3D printer and has already created several models for our clients. 3D printing of process units has several advantages throughout the design and construction phases, as well as continuing into ongoing operations. 3D plastic models make it easier for...
