Becht Case Study

Catalyst Hot Spots

Situation: Recently replaced FCC regenerator developed hot spot. Engineering company gave 2-hour limit without steam before nozzle would consume creep rupture life and was not fit-for-service.

Action Taken: 2-hour limit had just been exceeded and Owner was desperate.  Correct analysis was rapidly performed, and rational result obtained; the hot spot is essentially a local stress relief.

Results: Multimillion-dollar door sheet replacement advised by previous contractor avoided, operation continued safely with little to no damage expected by next TAR.
