Becht Helps Improve Energy System Integration for Innovative Clean Product Facility

Becht has been selected to provide Owners Technical Advisory Support to a North American facility that is applying an innovative process to convert natural gas into zero GHG producing hydrogen and high value co-products.  One of the facility’s challenges is finding the right blend of steam, power, and water usage to meet sustainability goals as well as local availability of these resources.  Becht Energy Infrastructure Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) within the Strategic Business Planning division collaborated with the client’s Project Team and EPC contractor specialists to:

  • Provide Cold Eyes Review of the energy integration philosophy
  • Brainstorm steam, power, and water optimization and integration opportunities
  • Identify water reduction and reuse options

The collective team identified over 30 opportunities to improve energy utilization and reduce water consumption, in addition to highlighting other non-utility improvement opportunities and project considerations.  Specifically, the team was able to reduce raw water load by over 25% and provide several alternative options to further improve the utility system integration.  Finally, the team identified the need for a holistic analysis early in the project design to determine air versus cooling water heat rejection to balance capital, operating cost, and operability elements.
