Maximizing Margin During Low Throughput 7 May, 2020 2 hours
SME: Robert Ohmes
Moderator: Robert Ohmes
SME Support Team: Mel Larson, Dan Brady, Rick Lewis, Henry Nicola, Debnil Chowdhury (IHS Markit)
The “perfect” storm of low oil price and reduced product demand has overtaken the global oil industry. This webinar featured an economic and technical discussion focused on pathways to not only survive the turbulence but also to improve profitability during the current low throughput, reduced demand, and tight margin environments. Refiners have responded to this crisis by reducing throughput and severity, changing targeted markets, and adjusting product slate while deferring cost by pushing maintenance activities forward. Capital spending has been curtailed temporarily to conserve cash. These shifts have been steep and rapid. Now, refiners want to look for ways to improve margins and profitability over this dynamic period. Led by Robert Ohmes, the Becht team partnered with IHS’s Executive Director Debnil Chowdhury to share market insights. The webinar featured discussion on the current COVID-19 impacts and oil price war, highlighted operating issues, provided near term mitigations, and suggested potential optimization opportunities. Included are longer term considerations as well as methodologies to re-think the future under a “new normal”.
