“The business world is full of successful leaders deserving of recognition—many of whom NJBIZ honors annually through various special awards programs ranging from Best Fifty Women in Business to Heath Care Heroes to General Counsel of the Year.

Then there are those business leaders who are in a class of their own: the pioneers and change-makers. The ones others look to for mentoring and advice. They paved the way, made their own rules and continue to kick-start change.

It’s these individuals who inspired NJBIZ to create its ICON Awards program. Now in its fourth year, the ICON Awards program recognizes New Jersey business leaders over the age of 60 who have helped the Garden State’s business community grow and continue to champion their industry through professional creativity, innovation and leadership.”

Charles Becht IV, CEO of Becht, was named as a recipient of this award in 2020. Below is the article.

Achievements:

Fellow ASME and J. Hall Taylor Medal recipient and a licensed professional engineer in 26 states and provinces, Becht is a recognized authority in pressure vessels, piping, expansion joints and elevated temperature design. He has more than 40 years of experience in design, design review, analysis, check-out, mechanical integrity, development, troubleshooting and failure analysis.

Who inspires you?

My inspiration for my career and my life is my father, Charles Becht III, who started Becht Engineering Company in 1964. At its inception, it was a small one-man operation, but he called it a company, because he aspired for it to become a large company that could service a multitude of clients and service the community at large. Before he passed away he wrote a mini autobiography, and on the cover he wrote this: “Success is a matter of constant learning and adjusting.” It is a mantra that our business still uses today.

Describe your leadership style and how it has helped you be successful.

My leadership style is to hire great people that align with our cultural values, make sure they are aligned with our organization, and empower them. It has helped make us successful because a great group of people aligned to common objectives and culture all work together to help us achieve our goals, the primary one of  which is to help our clients succeed.
