Nick Mangiapane
Nick Mangiapane has been in the power and refining industry since 2010, with progressive experience spanning inspection, reliability engineering, and refinery integrity leadership.
He most recently served as a Senior Refinery Inspector and Reliability Engineer at Valero Wilmington, where he managed PCMS and turnaround inspection activities and developed site inspection policies including Threaded Connections, Deadlegs, and Composite Tank Inspection programs. He also developed a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) for the site’s HF Alkylation Unit to weld Alloy 400 with PWHT and structured the site’s welding continuity log to comply with ASME Section IX lot requirements.
In addition to routine and turnaround execution, he supported priority on-call repair efforts including coke drum crack repairs, boiler leaks, and complex in-service repairs requiring inspection oversight, welding coordination, or engineered leak repair devices. As a Reliability Engineer, he reviewed and approved leak repair devices by verifying calculations in accordance with ASME PCC-1, PCC-2, and Roark’s stress formulas. He developed detailed cause maps, supported failure analyses, and modeled piping systems using CAESAR II and pressure vessels using COMPRESS to establish updated minimum thickness requirements.
Over a six-year period, he led the Damage Mechanism Review (DMR) program for all process units at Valero Wilmington and administered corrosion Integrity Operating Window (IOW) limits through Unit Health Monitoring systems. He developed science-based and dynamic IOWs by integrating PHD, PI, LIMS, IntelaTrac, and LabVantage data and collaborated closely with third-party process licensors and vendors including INEOS, SUEZ, and Baker Hughes. His inspection planning experience includes managing degradation mechanisms such as Naphthenic Acid Corrosion, Sulfidation, Lean and Rich Amine HSAS, Reheat cracking and power boiler damage mechanisms.
Prior to Valero, Mr. Mangiapane supported refinery inspection programs at ExxonMobil Torrance and Valero Wilmington as a Visual Inspector with TÜV SÜD America. He began his career with Acuren Inspection supporting power generation clients including RRI Energy and GenOn, initially generating 3D CAD drawings during outage support and later progressing into project management and Positive Material Identification (PMI) program implementation roles at refineries including ExxonMobil and Tesoro. During this period, he earned certifications including CWI and API 510, 570, 653, 571, 580, along with NBIC endorsement.
Mr. Mangiapane earned his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from California State University, Fullerton, and holds an Associate of Arts degree in Business Administration. He is based in Los Alamitos, California.
